What is a stokvel?
A group of people who save together. Every month everyone pays in the same amount, and one member takes the whole pot home.

Four steps from sign-up to payout
Register
Sign up with your name, email and cell number, then confirm your email.
Get a seat
The administrator approves you and gives you a seat. Your seat sets your payout month.
Pay in
Pay by EFT from your own bank by the 28th. Your profile shows when it arrives.
Get paid
In your month, once everyone has paid, you receive the pot around the 15th.

Every seat pays the same and receives the same. Earlier seats are paid sooner, but everyone keeps paying until month 4. These are example dates; yours are confirmed when the group is full.
What it costs and what you get back
The figures below are an example with R100 a month. Your group may use a different amount, and the rules are the same. Work out your own figures.
R100 a month
The same amount for every member, for 4 months. You pay in R400 in total and receive R400 once.
No deposit
There is nothing extra to pay up front. The group runs on trust, so everyone is checked and approved first.
No late fees
You pay your own bank transfer fee. The organiser covers the cost of paying out.
A payout is released only when every member has paid, so the group is protected.
See exactly where you stand
Log in to a private page that shows:
- Your group and your seat
- Your payout date and amount
- Every pay-in date and amount
- Paid, part paid or overdue for each month
- The date and reference of each payment received
You only ever see your own information.

How your money and details are protected
Approved members only
Everyone is checked and approved before they get a seat, and verified again before any payout.
Your details stay private
Only you and the administrator can see your information. Members never see each other's details.
Every payment is recorded
You get an email receipt. A wrong entry is voided, never deleted, and every action is logged.
Secure sign-in
The site runs over HTTPS, passwords are stored scrambled, and the administrator needs a two-step code.

The honest downsides
Everyone must pay
If a member stops paying, the whole group feels it. Deposits are used first, and unpaid members can be removed.
Not a bank
A stokvel earns no interest and is not covered by deposit insurance. Only join with money you can commit.
4-month commitment
You pay every month until the group ends, even after you have been paid. Leaving early has consequences, so read the pilot rules.
New and small
This is a pilot with a new system. Details may change as we learn, and you will be told before they do.
What we ask of you
By the 28th
Pay your amount by EFT. You get a reminder before the date.
Day 7 late
You receive a warning. Please contact the administrator if there is a problem.
Day 14 late
You receive a final notice. After this the administrator may remove you.
Every month
A payout is released only when every member has paid.
